The spirit of giving is deeply rooted in the Cheng family. The family’s philanthropic works trace a long tradition of giving back to society back to 1977, nearly half a century ago. Our Founder Dr. Cheng Yu-Tung made his very first contribution even prior to the inception of the charity foundation under his name in 1980. The Cheng family pays tribute to their unique history and upholds Dr. Cheng’s philanthropic principles in making meaningful contributions to the community.
Dr. Cheng Yu-Tung funded three education initiatives consecutively in 1977 to carry out his father’s advice. This also fulfilled his wish to support education as he had to drop out from school and work away from home in his childhood.
One of our Founder’s first grants made was to support the founding of Hong Kong’s first three-year part-time Master of Business Administration programme at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

In the same year, Dr. Cheng Yu-Tung took over five campuses of a private international school Delia Memorial School, and continued to provide education mainly for local and ethnic minority students in Hong Kong when the school’s founders Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Edmonds returned to the US.
Dr. Cheng also set up a fund, in the name of his father Mr. Cheng King-Kee, waiving the tuition fees for impoverished students from low-income families.
Dr. Cheng Yu-Tung, together with Mr. Lee Shau-Kee, the founder of Henderson Land, pledged the support on the expansion of Shunde Huaqiao Middle School at his hometown in Shunde District, Foshan City, Guangdong Province in mainland China.
Cheng Yu Tung Foundation, a non-profit making organisation, was officially incorporated on 10 October.
Cheng King Yee Foundation was established on 1 October.
At the opening ceremony of the Shunde Huaqiao Middle School, Dr. Cheng Yu-Tung launched the Cheng King-Yee Scholarship in memory of his father, seeking to support students from impoverished families at the school and the Shunde City at large to pursue university education. This in turn helped nurture talents at his hometown.
Funded by Dr. Cheng Yu-Tung (second from the right) on its establishment, The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s MBA Town Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui East which is dedicated for the three year part-time MBA programme was officially opened. Dr. Cheng cared about and also supported the sustainable development of the MBA curriculum with his commercial experience in addition to grant-making.
Between 1987 and 1994, Dr. Cheng Yu-Tung had been donating to Lun Jiao Middle School’s scholarships and grants schemes. Formerly named as Nanhu Academy, Lun Jiao Middle School was where Dr. Cheng received enlightenment education in his younger days.
Between 1987 and 1996, Dr. Cheng Yu-Tung contributed to the enhancement of medical services in mainland China by sponsoring 55 outstanding mainland doctors to receive specialist training at the Medical Centre of University of California in San Francisco of the US. This helped accelerate the reform and opening of China.
Once again Dr. Cheng Yu-Tung made donation to his hometown in Shunde District of Foshan City to build a new boarding school in Daliang town, which was established in 1995 and named as Zheng Yu Tong Middle School.
Dr. Cheng Yu-Tung continued to extend his support for the medical reform in the mainland China by launching the Dr. Cheng Yu Tung Fellowship programme to support mainland medical talents in receiving specialist training, clinical practice and management training at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong, to promote academic exchanges between mainland China and Hong Kong. At the end of the programme, the sponsored medical talents were required to return to the medical institutions at their origins and apply what they had learned.

Shun Tak Fraternal Association Cheng Yu Tung Secondary School was inaugurated. Dr. Cheng increased funding for additional equipment for the school in Tseung Kwan O, Hong Kong.
Dr. Cheng Yu-Tung donated to support the redevelopment of Shunde Huaqiao Middle School in his hometown for a second time.
In April, Dr. Cheng Yu-Tung (third from right) joined Director of Education Mrs. Fanny Law Fan Chiu-fun, JP (centre) officiated the opening ceremony of Shun Tak Fraternal Association Cheng Yu Tung Secondary School.
Dr. Cheng Yu-Tung made donation to the People's Government of Guangzhou Municipality and Shunde District, Guangzhou Province for building the new tertiary education institution which was later named as Shunde Polytechnic.
Since 2004, Dr. Cheng Yu Tung Foundation extended the reach of it support to poverty alleviation through education in the remote areas and national-level poor counties in mainland China. This included the improvement of basic education, renovation of dilapidated schools, school building and school facilities enhancement.
Dr. Cheng Yu-Tung made a donation to The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) via his charitable foundation, Cheng Yu Tung Foundation, to support the university's academic and research development, and to promote academic exchanges.

Dr. Cheng Yu-Tung donated to support the development of Zhengjingyi Vocational Technical School in Lunjiao, his hometown, between 2004 and 2006, in the name of his father Mr. Cheng King-Yee.

In February, Dr. Cheng Yu-Tung returned to his hometown Shunde and inscribed the words “Respect for Teachers” at the 10th anniversary celebration of the Cheng Yu Tung Middle School.
In the same month, Dr. Cheng Yu-Tung (second from right) funded the development of the second phase campus of the Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK).
Speaking at the cheque-presentation ceremony, Dr. Cheng encouraged young people to take advantage of the study opportunities and strive to broaden their horizon in the world of knowledge, and to advance themselves with the times. Chairman of the OUHK Council Dr. Charles Lee Yeh-Kwong (first from right) thanked Dr. Cheng for his enthusiastic support in education and said "it is not the first donation from Dr. Cheng.”
In March, Dr. Cheng Yu-Tung supported the campus development and academic research and development of the Faculty of Law at the University of Hong Kong. This helped nurture local talents, facilitate the building of the rule of law while ensuring future prosperity of China.

In May, after a devastating earthquake hit Wenchuan in the Sichuan Province of China, the Cheng family not only made a donation to the China Charity Federation for disaster relief, but also sponsored wireless video communication equipment to support the relief and reconstruction work of the frontline rescue team.
In October, a five-year partnership with the China Charity Federation was announced in Beijing seeking to support charitable causes in different major areas such as education, healthcare, emergency relief, support for the underprivileged as well as youth training. The project was carried out in the name of “Chow Tai Fook Charity Foundation” before the Foundation was inaugurated.
Apart from grant-making, the Cheng family also paid visits to express their care and warm wishes for the needed ones. In December, Chairman Mr. Peter Cheng led a team of volunteers, which were spilt into three groups, to visit orphans in the remote areas in Huaiji, Guangxi, showing their care and bringing supplies to nearly 1,000 orphans throughout the county.
In July, Dr. Cheng Yu-Tung made grants to support the construction of a research and academic building at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) which was named after him.

In August, Dr. Cheng Yu-Tung pledged another donation to support the development of residential colleges at the new campus at the University of Macau. One of the residential colleges was named as Cheng Yu Yung College as a token of sincere appreciation of his support.

In December, Ms. Sonia Cheng Chi-Man officiated at the signing ceremony on the donation for the Medical Science Building at the Tsinghua University on behalf of the Foundation. The donation helped improving the teaching and research environment of the Medical School, while supporting the institution to nurture medical talents and empowering medical researches.

In January, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) celebrated the grand opening of the first teaching hotel in Hong Kong for fostering hospitality and tourism professionals with a global perspective. The teaching building, Cheng Yu Tung Building, was named after Dr. Cheng Yu-Tung’s in appreciation of his contribution to CUHK over the years.

The Foundation fully funded the construction of Cheng Yu-Tung Medical Building at the second phrase of the Tsinghua University Medical School in Beijing to cultivate medical education and research in mainland China.

In February, the I.CARE Programme was launched in collaboration with The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in the name of “Chow Tai Fook Charity Foundation” prior to its official establishment in the same year. The programme aims to promote students’ holistic development through social and civic engagements in Hong Kong, mainland China and overseas.

With a donation from the Chow Tai Fook Cheng Yu Tung Foundation, HKUST sets out to build a new Research and Academic Building named in honor of Dr. Cheng Yu Tung in April.

On 4 September, Dr. Cheng Yu-Tung and his family members officially established the private family foundation Chow Tai Fook Charity Foundation in Hong Kong.
A dedication ceremony was held in November for the Cheng Yu Tung Tower in the University of Hong Kong’s Centennial Campus. The building is the first standalone building on campus for the Faculty of Law since its establishment in 1969. The new home provides state-of-the-art facilities, a new and larger moot court, advocacy laboratories, an expanded law library that is technologically equipped for contemporary research, various teaching and research facilities, and an Alumni and Reading Room.

In February, the Foundation supported The University of Hong Kong’s “We Are With You” Project, a social innovation project engaging students and staff of HKU to contribute on community development in Southern District for the underprivileged groups.

In the same month, the Foundation donated to the School of Law at the Tsinghua University and launched the Cheng Yu-Tung Law Development Fund for a period of five years to support the development of Tsinghua University Law School into a world-class law school.

In November of the same year, the Medical Science Building at Tsinghua University was completed. Equipped with 70 individual laboratories, classrooms, multi-purpose rooms and faculty offices, it was also supported by the Foundation with the establishment of the "Cheng Yu Tung Library" and “Cheng Yu Tung Medical Research Special Fund". The state-of-art scientific research centre enables the standard of medical education in the mainland to reach greater heights.

In February, the Foundation funded the opening of the Research Laboratory for Drug Development at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University to promote drug research and development and nurture biomedical and biotechnological research talents.
The Foundation supported the establishment of the robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery integrated suite and the introduction of Asia’s first fourth-generation da Vinci Robotic Surgical System with dual control panels at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, which enables complicated surgical procedures to be performed with greater precision.
In August, the opening ceremony of the Dr. Cheng Yu Tung Robotic-Assisted Laparoscopic Surgery Integrated Suite was held.
In December, the Foundation awarded grants for the Yan Chai Hospital on the establishment of the Cheng Yu Tung Child Development Centre to provide early treatment for children with special needs.

Chow Tai Fook Medical Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation, was established in Hong Kong.
In October, the Foundation supported the social enterprise Light Be on its innovative social housing project. By revitalising an abandoned textile factory into affordable homes, this project enabled short-term underprivileged families to boost upward mobility from poverty and live a more positive lifestyle. The project also served as a model for the community.

In May, the Foundation initiated the Family in Crisis Support Project in collaboration with St. James’ Settlement and the Hong Kong Family Welfare Society, providing financial assistance and counseling services for grassroot families with young children whose breadwinners suffered sudden loss of earning capacity or even passed away due to unfortunate family changes.

The Foundation once again funded the Hospital Authority on the establishment of the robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery integrated suite and the introduction of da Vinci Robotic Surgical System at the Queen Mary Hospital, which enables greater precision in minimally invasive surgeries and faster recovery.
In March, The Chinese University of Hong Kong named a newly established conference centre as Henry Cheng International Conference Centre in recognition of the Cheng family’s staunch support over the years. The new centre allows the University to host more international academic conferences and events to facilitate knowledge transfer and exchange.

In June, the Foundation once again offered support to the academic and research works of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology . The University named its robotics institute in Hong Kong and future Guangzhou campus after Dr. Cheng Kar-Shun as a token of heartfelt gratitude.
